BJP may have to pay in Bihar for Dharmendra's Odisha Dreams

  Dharmendra Pradhan, BJP, Bihar, Odisha
Though it’s very natural for Pradhan to dream big in politics, recent controversies over his alleged involvement in the case of corporate espionage in his ministry of Oil and Natural Gas and, also, in the Vyapam scam as one of the beneficiaries of the mastermind have not only threatened his career but also to the future of BJP in Bihar, the state where party is going to test its fate in the forthcoming assembly poll.

He smiles down upon you as you come out of the Airport at Bhubaneswar. His photos are plastered on every street corner, and every lamppost in the main avenues of the Capital city. Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, his chubby face is ubiquitous in every petrol pump and LPG point in the State. The huge image building spree undertaken by Dharmendra Pradhan, the blue eyed boy of Narendra Modi and party’s poster boy in Odisha and Bihar, is something that is never seen earlier in case of any other leader in the state.

The icing on the cake was huge hoardings released during the recent Nabakalebar depicting the trio of Modi, Amit Shah and Pradhan alongside the three holy chariots of the Rath Jatra. The hoarding smacked of megalomania and stark narcissism.

Such portrayal has raised a lot of criticism from the local devotees, who are already hurt by the politicisation of the Nabakalebar and the Rath Jatra. BJP too has made strident cries about the involvement of the Ministers in the secret rituals, and Pradhan cried himself hoarse about the sacrilege committed in the Puri temple.

Though elected to Rajya Sabha – the upper house of Indian Parliament - from Bihar, he is seen camping in Bhubaneswar most of the days, followed by his brat pack coterie of a dozen lightweight youth politicians who are duds allowed by the Minister to use and abuse facilities of corporations under the ministry of Oil and Natural Gas at their will. There is a race among these belchers to get him invited to openings, inaugurations, book releases, seminars, talk shows et al, to keep the face of the minister visible all around and in every household, on the TV screen. Since taken as a minister in the union government led by Narendra Modi, Pradhan is believed to have set in place a full time agency to carry out his propaganda through outdoor publicity and by using mainstream media as well as online and social media to keep him seen everywhere and to depict him as one of the “Maharathis” of the BJP. Press releases are made at the drop of a hat.

Quotation starts

Pradhan is leaving no stone upturned in projecting himself as the BJP’s most dynamic leader and the Chief Ministerial face for the 2019 polls. Some political analysts say that he would also be contended with the portfolio of Deputy Chief Minister in a situation where a coalition is struck between the BJP and the BJD.

Quotation ends

Pradhan is leaving no stone upturned in projecting himself as the BJP’s most dynamic leader and the Chief Ministerial face for the 2019 polls. Some political analysts say that he would also be contended with the portfolio of Deputy Chief Minister in a situation where a coalition is struck between the BJP and the BJD. It’s of course the fact that he couldn’t win an election since the BJP-BJD coalition broke and, probably, he would have been in the political wilderness had he been not accommodated in the Rajya Sabha from Bihar.

Sources say, the leader gets amused by the flattery around him and dreams to ride the Modi popularity wave to oust the BJD in the 2019 elections and capture power in Odisha despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reference to Naveen Patnaik as “Mera Mitra,” in a public meeting and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj endeared him as “Naveen Bhai” and top BJP leadership deliberately avoiding giving any adverse remark on Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Experts believe, the bigger interest of the party in Bihar would endanger Pradhan’s position in the party. It’s only to be seen if BJP’s wild bull in Odisha and his whole support team manage well to control the possible damage.
