EU delegation entered into controversy over discriminating Media in Orissa

"A delegation of European Union to look into the situation in Kandhamal in Orissa where violence reigned for months in 2008 has been accused of discriminating between media representatives in Orissa. While the state media and representative of national media have been quite in a positive impression about the visit of European Union Delegate, a seriously discriminatory treatment to the media representatives has raised doubt over the intension of the delegation and their nations behind the tour."

Basudev Mahapatra : February 03, 2010

The visit of European Union nations’ eleven member delegation to Orissa to see the situation and progress in Kandhamal created lots of doubts in the media circle, political parties and forums and parties, and the people of the state as well since the activities of the delegation seems less official and more a pre-decided tour to satisfy a particular community and its clerics in India and abroad.

While the state media and representative of national media were quite in a positive impression about the visit of European Union Delegate, a seriously discriminatory treatment to the media representatives raised doubt over the intension of the delegation and their nations behind the tour.

Most of the media was under the impression that, EU delegation would work to pacify the deadlocks in the process of development since the violence in Kandhamal in 2008. All media representatives were covering every movement and events to report the relevance of the delegation’s visit. But, when the media representatives went to join the interaction session of the European Union delegates with media, the fact came to notice was that only a few members of the media – possibly favourites of EU or the community they belong to – including OTV, NDTV and The Hindu were invited and others who followed the delegation since morning and reported their movements to public were restricted.

Larger group of media that has been equally or more sympathetic to the violence victims and that believes in ethical reporting instead of any kind of bias or compulsion has been kept out of the interaction session. From sources denied to reveal identity, the delegation invited the members from media that highlighted the plight of the violence victims from the minority community perspective.

Here the question arises, was there no role of other larger media group in highlighting the miseries of the minority community living in Kandhamal and building pressure on the government to act hard on the culprits? What made the EU to reach at such a conclusion? Have they monitored reporting by all the media?

The other shocking fact is, how the EU that always emphasises upon ethics and transparency did ignore the ethical part? Do the delegates and their nation believe that reporting the violence from a specific community perspective ethical journalism? It seems so as the delegation invited media representatives who reported the violence from minority community perspective, as the source said. However, the incident gave rest of the media a different impression and dragged the delegation of ethics teacher nations of the world into controversy.
