For OCA's Ashirbad, Gavaskar is just a commentator in Indian Cricket

OCA has replied to the BCCI query on the incident wherein the former has, in other sense, accepted non-compliance of ICC guideline while hosting the match. OCA’s submission that the guidelines shall be followed strictly in future and such incident shall not be allowed to repeat speaks that the guideline set by the international cricket body was not strictly followed till the last match.

The reaction of Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) Secretary Ashirbad Behera over legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar’s appeal, in the wake of crowd indiscipline during the second T20 International match between India and South Africa, to ban Barabati Stadium in Cuttack as an international cricket venue for two years has not only been shocking but has exposed the ugly face of OCA, which can even resort to gross indecency towards legendary cricketers and the game itself.

“Gavaskar, you are just a commentator; should give commentary, take money and go home. BCCI is the authority to decide whether to give a match or cancel it on basis of the report we are going to submit,” said OCA secretary Behera while speaking to an Odisha based TV channel correspondent.

Behera questioned Gavaskar’s authority to make the statement that said, “the next time they (OCA and Barabati Stadium) are due for an international (Cricket match), that should not be given to them, may be another two years before Cuttack gets away.”

“Gavaskar makes such a suo motu statement and the stadium will be banned? Is he the owner or boss of either BCCI or ours?” asked the OCA secretary Behera questioning the authority of Gavaskar to press for such disciplinary action.

As Behera’s reaction over Gavaskar’s appeal is creating ripples across the country and his indecent remark about one of world’s bests in the sport has shocked many, it too exposes OCA’s attitude towards cricket veterans like Gavaskar who was the Chairman of ICC Cricket Committee for eight years till May 2008.

Following Gavaskar, other celebrity cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar have also slammed the boorish crowd behaviour of throwing water bottles on the ground that disrupted the play. Tendulkar however sought the cricket loving crowd to be more tolerant to failure of the domestic team.

Quotation starts

What the irresponsible comments of Behera suggest is that the OCA and its Secretary are just doing business in the field of Cricket without having due respect for the sport, its discipline and the iconic personalities in it.

Quotation ends

In the meantime, OCA has replied to the BCCI query on the incident wherein the former has, in other sense, accepted non-compliance of ICC guideline while hosting the match. OCA’s submission that the guidelines shall be followed strictly in future and such incident shall not be allowed to repeat speaks that the guideline set by the international cricket body was not strictly followed till the last match.

Even though OCA has confessed that water bottles were allowed inside the gallery against ICC guideline on humanitarian grounds because people use to be there for long hours, it should have got an approval from BCCI for the same, which the hosting body didn’t do.

With a blind eye towards the faults of OCA, Behera’s careless as well as indecent remarks against Sunil Gavaskar have not only given solid spices to several TV channels and newspapers, but it must also have tarnished the image of OCA and the state of Odisha in the cricketing and cricket loving community of India.

The BCCI may also take strong note of it while evaluating the report submitted by OCA. And, the former may not take well the indecent comments made by the OCA Secretary.

While the pertinent questions at the moment are what really guides and what should guide the OCA to be disciplined enough and to qualify to host international cricket events at Barabati Stadium?

What the irresponsible comments of Behera suggest is that the OCA and its Secretary are just doing business in the field of Cricket without having due respect for the sport, its discipline and the iconic personalities in it.

And the obvious next question is, who is to be made accountable if the BCCI initiates disciplinary action against OCA and imposes ban on Barabati Stadium to host international cricket events?
