Odisha Dalit Girl Rape Case: Prime Accused nabbed by Police

"The case of rape of a dalit girl from a village of Odisha's Pipili Police Station tuned into a thorn in the throat of the Odisha Government and the Police department when Odisha High Court passed orders for immediate inquiry into the case and submit report and, also, instructed to make the best treatment available to the victim. The state government soon started an inquiry by the Crime Branch and then set a judicial commission of inquiry for probing into the case."

As a major breakthrough in the case of alleged rape of a dalit girl from Arjungoda village under Pipili Police Station in Odisha’s Puri district, the district police today arrested the prime accused Prasant Pradhan alias Pasia of Poparanga Village. Prasant Pradhan and three other accused Sukant Pradhan, Purnachandra Swain and Premanand Nayak were absconding since the incidence of the alleged rape and attempt to kill the victim who now struggles to come out of a coma state caused after being gang raped.

The victim who was allegedly raped on November 28, 2011, was denied by the local police to file an FIR and was also denied of immediate treatment for which the condition of the victim girl deteriorated rapidly. It was after strong remarks and instruction by the Odisha Human Rights Commission that the girl was given treatment and the Puri district police started an inquiry into the case.

The background as known from the members of victim’s family, the dalit girl who was the only witness of rape of her friend in the year 2008 fell victim to the vengeance of the alleged rapists those came on bail. While the girl who was raped in 2008 committed suicide a few days later, the surviving witness received threats to withdraw the case or face dire consequence. The family of the deceased dalit girl named Prasant Pradhan as the mastermind in the case as he had threatened the girl several times.

As per Kamala Behera, the Mother of the victim, “My daughter went to attend nature’s call at about 7 O’clock in the morning. After a few hours time people in a tractor passing by found the legs of someone behind a nearby bush. And, it was my daughter thrown in a critical condition. I believe it was Pasia alias Prasant who has done this because he threatened my daughter many times before”.

The case tuned into a thorn in the throat of the Odisha Government and the Police department when Odisha High Court passed orders for immediate inquiry into the case and quick submission of a progress report and, also, instructed to make available the best treatment to the victim. The state government soon started an inquiry by the Crime Branch and then set a judicial commission of inquiry for probing into the case.

While the girl is struggling in the hospital and medical authorities plan to shift her to AIIMS, New Delhi for treatment, her misery has sprouted uproar and politics outside. The MLA of Pipili Pradeep Maharathi, who is also the agriculture minister of Odisha, is dragged into controversy by opposition party leaders who suspect his role in pressurising the police for not accepting the FIR and registering a case. However, the MLA and Minister Pradeep Maharathi in his denial to all such charges says that he is equally shocked with such a case and will cooperate the investigations to make the culprits punished.

Now, with the arrest of the prime accused it is expected that the mystery would open soon and other accused persons would be nabbed by police.
