Filmmaker concerned about faulty Education System

In 2006, two short films of less than 6 minutes duration ‘The Reality’ and ‘The story of Suni’ made by national award winner young film maker Subas Das were selected for entry in the competition section of Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF). The films explain, by themselves, film maker’s concern for education of unprivileged children living in unhygienic slums and struggling with poverty, ignorance and humiliation.

This is the second opportunity for Mr. Das to see his films short-listed in prestigious MIFF. His short film “Wounded Moon’ based on the population explosion and the fast, individualistic as well as materialistic life in big cities had got an entry in MIFF 2000. Same year, 'Wounded Moon' had also got an entry in the IMAGE FORUM FESTIVAL, Japan.

Subas Das has proved his excellence as a thoughtful filmmaker in his first person narrative debut Oriya language film ‘Aw Aakare Aa (A, B, She - as Mr. Das transcribes it into English)’ wherein he has expressed his deep concern over the flaw full primary education system prevalent in Orissa and many parts of India. But unfortunately this is the only system of education in most part of Orissa and in total rural Orissa.

Mr. Das has tried to suggest an alternative to the age-old system in this 90 minutes movie through his protagonist ‘Mini’ who always wanted a teacher of her choice and finally discovered in herself only. Apart from bagging the National Award as best Oriya Film, ‘Aw Aakare Aa’ was selected for entry in the Children’s World Section of the 13th Golden Elephant International Children’s Film Festival 2003 at Hyderabad and 9th International Film Festival at Jamshedpur (Children’s section).

A passionate filmmaker with his own worldview of society, Mr. Das had to direct and produce the film with a loan of Rupees 15 Lakhs as no producer came forward to finance his idea. “The film could be possible due to my strong wish to make a good cinema that would rightly speak my mind and also make the power of positivism in me work on the screen”, says Mr. Das.
The form itself is the novelty of the film wherein the protagonist's childhood and adulthood are presented physically together (on the screen) to explain the encounter in her mind between a desired method of education and real (but faulty) practices in the prevalent elementary education system.

With worldwide appreciation to all his films, filmmaker Mr. Das is considerably satisfied and very much excited for his message would reach a bigger forum and large audience and help influencing the policy makers in developing an effective and flawless system of elementary education in India.

By making these socially relevant good films, filmmaker Das has expressed his concern and subtly passed a few suggestions by rightly using the medium for presenting the issues in their right perspective before the responsible audience. This is what every filmmaker can do as a part of their social responsibilities.
