Dolls for Adults: Compilation of art forms on a single canvass

"The creations of Mr. Balabantaray exhibited in the gallery were neither simple painting nor are they imprisoned within the boundaries of any particularly genre. Rather, every creation is a nice blend and compilation of forms and genre."

HNF Correspondent : October 2, 2007

"Expressing thought and ideas not, simply, by words but creatively through a medium" is what most of us believe ‘Art‘ – be it by subtle writing, dramatic treatment or strokes on a canvass. Suresh Balbantaray of Orissa is an artist involved in all the aforesaid mediums and still striving to attain versatility.

An officer in the Central Excise department, Suresh Balabantaray happens to be a noted writer, columnist and drama director in the state of Orissa whose talent in the field of fine art and paintings came to public notice only after his exhibition ‘Dolls for Adults’ at ‘Modern Art Gallery’ – the dedicated art gallery in the city of Bhubaneswar. If you sense anything hot from the word ‘Adult’, you are wrong. The artist intends to say in the word that his art creations are for the grown up brains that can be better defined by the word ‘Adult’.

Fine art and experiments always go together and the artist draws his imaginary world using the brush only or putting things his own way. The creations of Mr. Balabantaray exhibited in the gallery were neither simple painting nor are they imprisoned within the boundaries of any particularly genre. Rather, every creation is a nice blend and compilation of forms and genre.

The paintings explaining the random imaginations of the artist are unique because of their folk impression and the 3D impression of characters for which Mr. Balabantaray has pasted painted wooden flat dolls and designed rubbing erasers as characters and elements of his paintings.

A Little dissatisfied over the feeble response from the artist circle Mr. Balabantaray seems to be optimistic about his future in the domain of Art as he explains, “Although my appearance as an artist has not been well appreciated this time, hope my continuous efforts in this field will make people see my art and appreciate.”
