Tourism Fuels More Investment into Orissa

"Realising the demand for accommodation and other services required by the tourists, the state and, particularly, its capital city Bhubaneswar is buzzing with hotels, restaurants, malls wearing a new thematic look taking the high ground of international standards."

Basudev Mahapatra : May 30,2007

Known worldwide as a huge base of natural resources, dense and diverse vegetation on vast mountain ranges habited by a variety of wild lives, an endless strip of calm casuarinas fringed coastline, Orissa is equally rich with a cultural history marked by the holy shrines and monuments across the landscape explaining the development of monumental art and many traditions of performing as well as visual art forms. All these, combined together, have been attracting lakhs of tourists from across the globe making a business over 20 billion rupees from over 46 lakhs of domestic tourists and 33 thousands of foreign tourists, a growth by 12.3 and 15.6 per cent of the 2004 figures respectively.

To accommodate the high spending tourists visiting Orissa, there are around 20 star category hotels with their status ranging from single to five-star deluxe having accommodation privilege for around 2000 visitors. Apart from these, thousands of lodgings and guest houses including government guest houses, Panthanivas, Panthasala and Yatri Nivas by Orissa Tourism Development Corporation and Department of Tourism, Orissa are scattered throughout to accommodate the budget tourists. However, there is a need for quality as well as budget hotels to match the requirements of the tourists.

Realising the demand for accommodation and other services required by the tourists, the state and, particularly, its capital city Bhubaneswar is buzzing with hotels, restaurants, malls wearing a new thematic look taking the high ground of international standards.

The recent enthusiasm of corporate steel makers and mining industrial houses has doubled the excitement in the tourism industry and other allied industries like hotel and restaurant industry, real estate business sector, houses interested in establishing retail shopping complexes, entertainment hubs and multiplexes etc. Interest of TATAs, Taj Group, U-mac (Radison), Sinclair, Lakshmi Franklin Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. Etc. to set their hotels in different places of the State are the indications of the possibility of a eye catching growth in the tourism and the allied sectors in Orissa.

A study by the department of tourism reveals the fact that 71% of the international tourists visit the state for holidaying and spend more than 30% of their stay in shopping, restaurants and Bars. This fact has opened up opportunities for those who are interested in setting sophisticated food points and retail segment. Typical Oriya food joints in star hotels, as Kerla has come up with, would add to the touristy flavour of the State.

As a result, Bhubaneswar has one stop shopping complex like Big Bazar, a pure handicraft mall like Ekamra Haat, many café coffee day and food points. More and more Private or Corporate partners are now coming into the state with the aim of setting up retail shopping complexes, food points and restaurants. All these possibilities have posed Orissa Tourism industry as one of the most potential area for investment.

In order to exploit the potential to the maximum, Orissa Tourism is working on extension of rest houses and ethnic resorts in the dense forests of Simlipal Biosphere, Koraput, Kandhamal etc. to promote wildlife and eco-tourism.
